Crozet Indoor Sports Facility

My quick thought: Crozet needs this. “Where” is going to be an interesting challenge.

by Justin & Jessica Byrd

Last Saturday, July 28, we officially launched the website for Crozet Sports and shared it with the western Albemarle community through various social media sites.  The vision and journey for Crozet Sports, however, began late last year. Our family moved to Crozet in July of 2015 and immediately joined the athletic community in both baseball and soccer.  As our kids got older, their athletic interests expanded. As we drove to our increasing number of sporting events, we routinely discussed how amazing it would be to have more field space and athletic events right here in Crozet.  That conversation transitioned to include the need for indoor options that could be utilized year-round and before we knew it Crozet Sports was born!

In case you haven’t heard yet, Crozet Sports is a community-oriented sports organization that will serve the growing athletic and health needs of the western Albemarle community.  Crozet Sports will feature an indoor sports training facility and will offer an array of athletic opportunities for the youth athlete and active adult.

Early in this journey we connected with leaders of local youth sports organizations.  With their feedback as well as valuable input from our real estate development team we have brought our vision to life!

The Indoor Sports Facility will feature the following

  • Indoor turf fields designed for lacrosse, soccer, football and field hockey
  • Multi-purpose hard courts to be used for basketball and volleyball
  • Indoor cages, pitching tunnels, and training areas for baseball and softball
  • State-of-the-art locker rooms including oversized lockers for equipment
  • Student-athlete classrooms
  • Sports performance training and functional fitness areas
  • Mezzanine level including a sports lounge and viewing gallery for families, fans, and community events
  • ……and much more!!

We will strive to provide the youth of our community with the resources they need to develop in the sports they love and the opportunity to play year-round.  Our focus is also on growing the character of each of our youth athletes as they learn the value of hard work, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and integrity through training and playing sports.

We are also excited to share that starting late fall, the Crozet Sports Academy will begin offering sports camps and clinics in Crozet!  Offerings will include instructional youth clinics for baseball, softball, soccer, football, and a number of other sports based on community interest.  Registration for these clinics will be announced both on our website http://crozetsports.com/ and through our social media pages.

Since announcing our launch, we have heard from many in our community who have embraced our vision.  There are so many individuals and families who are as excited about this facility as we are and we want to hear from you!  At this time Crozet Sports is conducting an interest survey to gain feedback from residents in Albemarle County. The site location of the indoor facility is to be determined but will be located in western Albemarle.  We strongly encourage everyone who is interested in this facility to complete the survey. Community feedback is important to the design process and to ensure that the facility meets the athletic needs of our community.

Please visit our website http://crozetsports.com/ to learn more and complete the survey as we continue the development of an indoor sports facility to serve the growing athletic needs in western Albemarle County.  To stay up to date on the facility development and our sports academy offerings, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @CrozetSports and Instagram. We also need your help getting the word out!  Please share our website, survey and social media sites with your friends!

Thank you for your support and we look forward to serving our community.

Jarmans Invitational Marathon

I love everything about this marathon, number one being that I’m not doing it, wouldn’t do it, and am happy that others are.

The description of the race is one of the best I’ve seen. Some of y’all should do it.

I have ridden my bike up Jarmans at least 5 times. Over the course of a couple years. These folks are going to run up and down Jarmans 5 times. In a couple hours.

Hey, Crozet is fit,  and the folks at Crozet Running are helping keep us that way.

Jarmans Invitational Marathon (JIM) (or FB, if that’s for you)

The Jarmans Invitational Marathon will take place on Saturday, August 4th at 12:01pm in Crozet, Virginia. Pretty much everything about this race sucks.

Course: The course sucks. The race starts at the intersection of Jarmans Gap Rd and Greenwood Rd in Crozet, Virginia. From there, runners will run up Jarmans – 2.9 miles and 1,522 ft of elevation gain, then turn around and come right back down 2.9 miles and 1,522 ft. Runners will repeat this lap five times for a total of 7,610ft elevation gain and loss over 29.0 miles. Jarmans is a steep gravel road, with some areas shaded and some areas in full sun. There are minimal scenic views. The summit of Jarmans is simply a muddy parking spot and an ‘End State Maintenance’ sign. You will run by a junkyard and several pit bulls. There are a lot of littered Bud Light cans lining the course. The train crosses Jarmans and may or may not be running during the race. The course is gonna suck.

Weather: The weather is going to suck. The race starts at 12:01pm, maximizing heat and sun exposure. There may be afternoon thunderstorms. If there is not, the road will likely be dry and dusty.

Superintendent Listening Tour at Western Albemarle 31 July

via email (I changed some of the bolding to focus on Crozet)

Dear Community Members,

My summer listening tour is underway! I’ve already met with several groups of students and teachers. It has been very helpful to hear so many ideas about bright spots in our schools, opportunities for improvement, and your advice for me. I’m looking forward to my first community session this week on Wednesday evening, July 25, 6 to 7:30 at Albemarle High School.

If you’re planning to attend, please remember to register, which helps us with planning.

Last school year, our 14,000 students represented 89 countries and spoke 74 home languages! Demographically, our students were 10.5% Black, 12.8% Hispanic, and 65.4% White. Ten percent were English Learners; 30.4% received free and reduced price meals; 11.9% were identified for special education services; and 9.8% were identified as gifted.

Albemarle County Public Schools is becoming a more vibrant community, offering continued opportunities to be enriched by our diversity and to grow stronger together.

My summer listening tour is an opportunity to hear about the needs, challenges, hopes and ideas from community members who bring a broad range of life experiences to our school division.

I hope you can join me at one of the following Listening Tour opportunities:

  • Wednesday, July 25 | 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. | Albemarle High School | Register

Mid-2018 Crozet Real Estate Market Update

Crozet real estate market update with Greg Slater and Jim Duncan with Nest Realty.

The first half of 2018 is behind us, and we talked about resales vs new construction, home prices, where in Crozet homes are selling, what happened with home inventory over the past few years.

Note that this is a longer video than typical; we covered a lot.

Thanks to the Rooftop for letting us use their … Rooftop.

(Greg and I are getting accustomed to doing these videos together … we will get better)

Stop at Crosswalks

Crozet Crosswalks

I* was riding my bicycle the other morning around 7:30, and stopped for two women trying to cross from the Piedmont Place side to the Post Office side of Crozet Avenue. They seemed perplexed for a moment when I stopped, and put my hand out to signal to the cars behind me.

One of the women said, “you don’t have to stop, the cars aren’t,” and I stayed put until they crossed.

Crozet Crosswalks

*Really didn’t want to make this a story about me as it’s a story about Crozet & neighborliness, but as I was the one on the bike …

250 in Ivy Closed; VDOT Working to Alleviate Traffic

Reminder: 250 in Ivy closed Friday 13 July at 8pm.

From Joel DeNunzio with VDOT:

Due to the closure of the Route 250 bridge over Little Ivy Creek, VDOT anticipates an increase in traffic accessing I-64 at exit #107 in Crozet.  Temporary changes at the I-64 #107 interchange have been made to better accommodate traffic over the next two weeks.

Temporary traffic control has been set up at the Crozet interchange to allow free flow traffic from I-64 west to Route 250 east.  In addition, the traffic patterns from Route 250 west to I-64 east have been modified to allow additional queuing on Route 250 if necessary.
These changes are temporary in support of the Route 250 closure at the Little Ivy Creek bridge closure for the next two weeks.  They are intended to provide better traffic flow and safer traveling conditions for the detoured traffic.
It’s going to be fine.
