Crozet Transforms from Suburban Outpost to Health and Fitness Epicenter

While lovely suburban neighborhoods, mountain vistas, and excellent schools have been the hallmark of Crozet’s popularity, a new scene is helping to shape Crozet population both figuratively and literally – Health and Fitness. For a town with a relatively small population, the number of community assets to support our health and fitness reflects the high demand.

A Fit Crozet

Crozet is a fit place.

As frequently happens, I was answering a question for a buyer client moving to Crozet – “where are the gyms and yoga in Crozet?” I started rattling off the a litany of such places; that led to my asking the question on the Crozet FB page.

Crozet, while not a town, is becoming more and more self-sufficient; going to Charlottesville is less necessary (unless you know, for a job). I’m hoping that Perrone Roboticsmove to downtown Crozet will be a big jumpstart for the “needing jobs in Crozet” aspect.**

That said … (let me know what I/we missed!)

Fitness/workout/healthy things to do in Crozet

*I know some people do new year resolutions, so hopefully this will help fulfill some of those!

**Maybe next time Crozet/Albemarle have a shot at a Deschuttes or Stone brewery, they won’t flub that opportunity.

Crozet Angel Tree – 2016 Edition

Update 17 November 2016

It’s that time of year again. Wow.

via email:

I can hardly believe that it is Angel Tree time again, but it is.  I am wondering if you might be able to help spread the word as you have done the past few years?  We have received angel information from Crozet Elementary, Brownsville Elementary, Henley, and Western and we need HELP!! We have 199 angels who need a sponsor to help brighten the holidays by providing NEEDED items, such as clothing, coats, shoes etc.

Please consider partnering with us and sponsoring an angel, or a family of angels. This is a great project to do with your children or at your place of employment. UNWrapped gifts are due to Crozet Baptist Church by Monday November 28th. Please contact Tracey Pugh at [email protected] to find out more about this wonderful program, or to request an angel.

Many thanks!

Believing the Best,

Tracey

Chalk Kindness at Brownsville Elementary

Sent by email:

Here are a couple of photos from Kindness In Chalk at Brownsville this morning.
Holly Grimm brought it to our school last year and we fell in love with it. This year, she and Kim Nicoletti chaired the event. It’s such minimal effort for maximum benefits to the students. It was started in 2014 by a mom in Minnesota. You can find more info here.
There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the faces of the kids light up as they get off the bus. I watched a 4th grade boy walk slowly down the sidewalk, reading aloud each positive message. That boy walked into the doors this morning with a smile on his face. Letting these kids know how loved they are and surrounding them with messages of encouragement was what this was all about. 🙂

About that Snob Zoning Story

A couple days ago, I posted a story on the RealCrozetVA facebook page linking to a story written by Neil Williamson with the Free Enterprise Forum titled, ‘Snob Zoning’ Crozet Master Plan in the Works?

Read. What are your thoughts on a volunteer group re-writing the Crozet Master Plan?

“Perhaps the question should be “After millions of dollars of planning and infrastructure spending, should Crozet residents be allowed to stifle population and economic growth by hijacking the master planning process?”

We’ve recently learned such a plan is in the works. And it is a bad idea. Please let me explain.”

An interesting discussion ensued, and I offered (as I have for 10 years) this page to anyone who wanted to write a rebuttal. So far, only Tom Loach has taken the time to do so. Thanks, Tom.

One thing that I’ll set forth (again, and I shouldn’t have to as most of you are reasonable adults). If you want to discuss this, do so thoughtfully. Agree/disagree – fine. Emotionally – fine.  Nasty – not fine. From here on out, I’ll be more liberal with my block/delete powers both here and on the Facebook page. 🙂 We’re neighbors. Most of us are nice.**

The floor is Tom’s* –

Since Mr. Duncan has welcomed responses to Neil Williamson’s article and since I’m the person Mr. Williamson seems to have the most problem with I thought I should respond, first to Mr. Williamson and then to some of the responses on the Facebook page.

To start with Mr. Williamson is incorrect when he states the community is re-writing the Master Plan.  What we’re going to do is to update the Master Plan. The reason for the update is

  1.  The Master Plan was scheduled to be updated in 2015, but the county told us they don’t have the money to do it.  We’re now told it may be 2018 before the county gets around to it.
  2.  Obviously with some of the more recent development issues there is clear evidence that the plan needs to be updated as soon as possible to insure a number of clarifications are made so there is no ambiguity in the language.

As for Mr. Williamson’s quote from me  “he could not ever see a circumstance where he would vote in favor of a project that the CCAC did not support”, italics and bolding courtesy of Mr. Williamson, I can only respond by saying “YES”, I said it and the reason I said it is because I have explicit trust in my neighbors who have volunteered their time and talents to Crozet to make the right decisions.   Continue reading “About that Snob Zoning Story”

Why Do You Love Crozet? Part 2

Downtown Crozet

Why do you love Crozet?

Crozet is at an interesting crossroads. People move here – and stay here –  in large part because of the community, the mountains, the setting, the amenities, and the small town feel.

I can’t tell you how many times I ask my clients, “Why Crozet?” and one of their first answers is either “community” or “to be part of something.”

What are the things about Crozet that you/we want to protect? To prioritize?

I love Crozet. I love the community.  I want Crozet to remain special. It’s going to change; how we change and grow is critical.

The answers below to the question, “Why do you love Crozet?” are tremendous. Click through, spend some time.

Some of the highlights

  • Mountain views
  • Crozet Library
  • Great Valu
  • Coffee shops
  • Small town living
  • Sal’s
  • Beaver Creek
  • Orchards
  • The people
  • Restaurants
  • And so. Much. More

To be and remain a community, infrastructure needs to be a critical component of how we grow – bike lanes and sidewalks are crucial to this – (read this!). Connecting humans needs to be at the forefront of how we grow, rather than a casual afterthought.

Think about this: in the  Crozet Board of Trade meeting on 18 July, Frank Stoner, who is developing Barnes Lumber, mentioned that the Crozet design guidelines call for 10 foot sidewalks whereas VDOT calls for 5 foot sidewalks … if VDOT won’t maintain the sidewalks, who will? We are in challenging times.

Part 1, if you’re interested.

Crozet Business Owners Meeting at PRN – 18 July

The last Crozet Business Owners meeting was quite good, well attended, and frankly, a bit inspiring to hear Crozet business owners discuss the need to increase business, tourism, and awareness of Crozet. I expect this evening to be interesting and useful as well.
