Stolen Car in Crozet

After the recent break-ins in Crozet, one would think that the criminals would move on … lamentably, my neighbor’s car was stolen last night/early this morning.

If anyone sees a blue Honda Civic, license plate JSY-1778,

please call Albemarle County Police – 434-296-5807 or Crimestoppers – 434-977-4000 – or 911 if you see the car around town..

Update 02 August 2009: The car is back in the owners’ possession, “with everything in it and not a scratch on it.” Hoorary!

Rash of Break-ins in Crozet This Week

Angry, sad, disturbed … the emotions ran the gamut.

The reports rolled in Thursday as residents of Parkside Village discovered the items missing from their vehicles – an iPod, DVD player, a handgun, cash, glove boxes rifled through … Thieves broke into several vehicles between 1 and 3 am on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, leaving no sign of forced entry on the locked cars and leaving a neighborhood with questions.

"No one was hurt" is the bright side.

If you were affected, please contact the Albemarle County police department – 434-296-5807.

One report says that a gold Kia with a dented side door may be involved.

It’s not comforting, but break-ins happen. Forest Lakes last year, Greenbrier earlier this year … unfortunately, crime happens. Let’s just hope that the police are able to find and prosecute the thieves.

As an aside, this is an example of how the community needs better online crime data; SpotCrime isn’t good enough (yet) and PDF reports are frustrating to work with. Wouldn’t it be great

Crozet Mudhouse in C-Ville Weekly

C-Ville profiles the forthcoming Crozet Mudhouse.

When this vintage building on the intersection of Three-Notch’d Road and Crozet Avenue whose storied history includes, among other things, being a railroad hotel and the town grocery with a real soda fountain, opened up they knew they’d found the right location for their longtime interest in expanding to Crozet and making a coffeehouse/community meeting space for “fluid social interaction,” says Lawrence.

Letter from a Reader

Unfortunately, the garbage distributed throughout Crozet last night is not unique to Crozet – it was dropped off in Charlottesville a few years ago.

(did you know that the County Police have online crime reporting? I didn’t either)

This, from a concerned Crozet reader:

Good morning, all. I didn’t actually notice this trash in my driveway until another parent at the bus stop just mentioned it, but the white supremacist group, the Aryan Nation, tossed copies of their newsletter, the Aryan Alternative, in many of our driveways last night. Without evening opening it you can see the racist propaganda they’re trying to spread. Not something I want my children to find in the driveway! Not something I want to read, either.

While freedom of speech protects their right to distribute this filth, it does not protect them from littering! I called the county police, and they said that yes, because they tossed it in our driveways, we can report them for littering! Every single newspaper tossed in our driveways is a count of littering that can result in a fine. Since they distributed dozens of them, we can hit them where it hurts!!!

You can report them online in just a few minutes at
http://www.albemarle.org/policeonlinereporting/

I took a picture of the paper being in my driveway and for the time being am not going to throw it out in case the police wants it as evidence. I would encourage you to do the same if you can, because with proof, a fine will absolutely stick. Even if you already did throw it out, please report it.

Now unfortunately, if they want to do this again, they legally can put the paper in our newspaper slots or even tape them to our front doors (although I would argue this is trespassing), but if enough of us file a report, hopefully they’d discover that Crozet will not be friendly toward their presence here and will get the message to stay away.

Crozet Family Trying to Come Home

NBC29 Reports:

Gerard and Pauline Brikkenaar Van Dijk and their three children had to leave the United States because their visas ran out. Now, red tape and a clerical error are keeping them from returning to Crozet.

The family has been in the Dutch Antilles since October and hoped to return to Crozet, Virginia this week but don’t have the papers to get into the United States.

In a fax to Congressman Tom Perriello’s Charlottesville office, Mr. Brikkenaar Van Diik explains his family’s return was denied by the State Department in March because of a clerical error on the application.
