Crozet Safety Corps Meeting – 10 June 2013

via email from Tom Loach – (bolding mine)

I received the following from the police Department describing a crime problem in Crozet. Jim Crosby and I have been working to establish what we call the Crozet Safety Corps and will be having a meeting at the fire house Monday, June 10th at 7:30. At that meeting will be Officer Andy Gluba, who is a Crime Prevention Officer and will speak on the subject of setting up Community Safety Groups in Crozet. Our group will also be looking at the subject of Emergency Preparedness. We have set up a web site: www.crozetsafetycorps.org. I hope any members of the community who are interested in joining us or would just like to hear from our police department will attend?.

?I wanted to let you know that the Crozet area has been experiencing a rash of vehicle break-ins over the past three and half weeks specifically in the Wickham Pond/Old Trail area. We have also experienced a rash of vehicle break-ins in the Ivy Road area specifically in the Canterbury Road area. It does not appear that the vehicle break-ins in the Ivy area are related to the Crozet area break-ins. I want to reassure you that we are aware of the problems and have dedicated the resources to hopefully apprehend the offenders.?

?Please communicate with your neighbors and friends that live in these area, to lock their car doors and secure all valuables before they go in for the night. The suspect(s) appear to be entering vehicles that have been left unlocked and have small amounts of cash and electronics left in the vehicles. Please let everyone know to be diligent in calling the police department should they see anyone in the neighborhoods late at night that should not be there. It appears that the suspect(s) are roaming the neighborhoods after midnight to about 5:00 a.m. in the mornings.?

?Thank you for getting this information out to your community members.?

??Lieutenant Greg Jenkins?Blue Ridge District Commander

We seem to get rashes of break-ins every once in a while. Dammit.

Hurricane Preparedness – Tax Holiday

From the Daily Progress

With hurricane season just around the corner and memories of last year’s powerful derecho, now is the best time for Virginia residents to stock up on storm-ready items — and save money.
Shop during Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday — which begins Saturday — and pay no sales tax on supplies for protecting homes and businesses. The tax-free holiday runs through Friday.

U.S. government forecasters announced Thursday that they expect three to six major hurricanes from another busy Atlantic storm season, according to The Associated Press. Hurricane season officially begins June 1.

Snow! In Crozet

Hey, Crozet. It might snow. Perhaps more than 2 inches.

We have proven before that we look out for each other. Let’s plan to look out for our neighbors again, shall we?

And if it does not snow, let’s plan to look out for our neighbors anyway. 🙂

From Daily Progress:

Groups ranging from the National Weather Service to AccuWeather.com and the Weather Channel predicted anywhere from 4 to 20 inches of snow to fall and blow about Central Virgina in a storm expected to begin Tuesday night and intensify early Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service expects 8 and 16 inches of snow to fall in Charlottesville and urban Albemarle County beginning Tuesday night and continuing through Wednesday. Localities in higher elevations, such as Crozet and Afton, are expected to get 10 to 18 inches of snow, as are portions of Greene and Madison counties.

ArtFest in the West

This could be the start of something big … via email:

Introducing ArtFest in the West

Knowing first-hand how valuable the arts are in educating the whole child, a small group of parents started conversations about building up this capacity in the Western-feeder pattern public schools. This effort snowballed when parents spoke to teachers and school administrators. And it was no surprise that other parents were having similar discussions–including those expressed in the RealCrozet blog.
We put our heads together and a new event was born — ArtFest in the West. Mark your calendar for March 2, 2013 (6-10pm) at The Lodge at Old Trail. Together we’re going to make art happen in Western Albemarle! ArtFest will feature student talent in the performing, visual, and culinary arts from Elementary through High School.

Why is ArtFest So Important?

·      To showcase student talent so that our youth can celebrate arts in their education and maturation.
·      To take an active role in expanding the importance of the arts in our public schools.
·      Western Albemarle County is a very talented place and the arts are a vital part of a thriving Community. Continue reading “ArtFest in the West”

Food Drive in Western Albemarle

From NBC 29

Kids and teens in western Albemarle County are kicking off a campaign to collect food for hungry families.
…

All of the food will be donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

…

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank experiences a drop in food donations after the holidays. The collection group says this is its way to give back even after the season of giving.

Donations can also be made on Monday, February 18 beginning at 10 a.m. at Trailside Coffee. The group will have a large truck outside.

Peachtree Baseball Registration + Need for Coaches

Peachtree baseball registration is Tuesday, 15 January and Thursday 17 January at the Old Trail Clubhouse from 6:30pm to 9pm – or you can register online.

They are also looking for coaches – maybe 10-15 or so – to help coach the more than 400 kids who play. And, as a friend puts it: “The great thing about this league is that it is one of the few places that old Crozet and new Crozet come together regularly.”

Tweeting the Western Albemarle Redistricting Meeting – 12-11-12

Click through to read the @Storify I just put together curating a lot of the tweets from last night’s meeting.

Once again, Kelly has provided an excellent summary from her side of the table

Quick recap of last night’s public comment session as seen from “behind the table”. Overall, it was great to see such a huge turnout, not just from the MLS community but from all areas of the western feeder pattern. Most of the comments were thoughtful, well-informed, and led to a consistent narrative: growth in the far western part of the County must be addressed through comprehensive long-term planning and investment in education facilities, rather than continued reliance on redistricting measures.

??A couple of key phrases that stuck with me were “Look Again” (thanks, BES!), “No Compelling Reason”, and “Community Schools Should Grow With the Communities They’re In”. These comments really encapsulate how it seems most folks feel about the leadership (or lack thereof) from the BOS regarding school funding. ?
?
It was beyond clear that small, piecemeal redistricting measures (and, in fact, the idea of using redistricting as a first solution in general), is not seen as an effective long-term solution. ?

?The issue of a cost-benefit analysis was alluded to multiple times, and it’s clear that western feeder pattern families take exception to the any notion that redistricting (often called a “shell game”) and its associated costs (in terms of community/excessive transition for kids/transportation issues/potential loss of staffing resources at the school level) are so high as to overshadow any perceived (and likely, short-term) benefit. It was also mentioned that a move of children out of MLS to Murray or Crozet would effectively eliminate additional seats that may be needed in future years to deal with growth at Brownsville. ?

?Investment doesn’t necessarily mean taxes should be raised, however. There were many mentions of the CIP, and how this guiding document should be reanalyzed, and perhaps, reprioritized to deal with emerging needs in the west. There were multiple calls for funding for expansions at Crozet Elementary, WAHS, and Henley Middle School. I hope this is simply a starting point for getting many more of us informed and opinionated about the CIP priority. The time is now to continue to have your voice heard.?

?We also heard several folks touch on the need to address the modernization project at Red Hill Elementary as a matter of fundamental fairness. I think it goes without saying that this project should be completed without regard to other growth area issues, as it speaks directly to the overall ACPS goal of providing a “world class education” to all students. ?

?And finally, a bit of editorializing: The many kind remarks to the volunteer members of the committee were also noted, and appreciated. On behalf of the committee, I’d like to thank the many interested parents who’ve jumped in to this discussion, gotten themselves informed and involved, especially at a busy holiday time of year. I’d also like to reiterate my appreciation for the responsive, professional manner in which all of the local school Principals, Josh Davis, Matt Haas, and the entire ACPS staff have led this process. Our leadership core–of both staff and parent volunteers–is strong and I feel more confident than ever that this process is just the start of a new era of school planning and focus in western Albemarle. Please, please, stay involved–This is a long-term discussion that will take all of us! Continue reading “Tweeting the Western Albemarle Redistricting Meeting – 12-11-12”
