Why do you like being a kid in Crozet?

Would your kids be willing to write a few sentences about why they have loved growing up in Crozet? I’ll publish them all here. Interested? Please leave their thoughts in the comments or email me.

Here’s my rising 6th-grader’s offering:

“Everyone is so nice here and I’ve made a lot of friends over the years. One reason I like Crozet is because I like to read, and there is a library, and a bookstore called Over the Moon.

I’ve loved going to Dairy Queen, Crozet Pizza, Sal’s and Fardowners. I love to swim at the Crozet Pool and Mint Springs. There is also a soccer field and two parks.

Also, since I went to Crozet Elementary most of my friends live near me.

Almost every morning before school starts, (daddy note: not that often!) I love getting a chocolate croissant and a cup of water at the Mudhouse. And their hot chocolate is delicious.

Also growing up, I’ve loved exploring the lumber yard. I love hearing trains every day.

I love how it is not a big city like New York, and how it’s not like a couple of farms. I like how it’s in the middle.

So that is why I have loved growing up in Crozet.”

Be Aware of Dominion Power’s Deceptive Installers

Quick update regarding the below, in response to one of the emails I’ve received about this:

I think the email was less about advocating for denying the smart meters, and more about how the installers were being dishonest with the folks who chose to opt out.
That said, here are two links about why some have chosen to opt out.
For my tin foil hat perspective, jump to the end.
Update #2 – Dominion says it’s a miscommunication from their contractor to the customer. Statement from them at the end of this post.

via email from Ann Mallek:

“Please help to make residents aware of deceptive practices on the part of Dominion Virginia Power smart meter installers.

CCA Needs Our Help for the 4th of July

CCA Needs Volunteers for the Independence Day Celebration. Learn more at their site.

We need your help for just an hour or two Sunday July 5. Below is the website to sign-up to help with the Crozet Independence Day Celebration (CIDC) next Sunday, July 5, between 5PM to 10PM. There are a variety of tasks and time slots. Most of the time slots are only an hour – so there’s lots of ways to help and still enjoy the event.

To sign up, go here.

When you sign-up it will ask for your name, email and, optionally phone number. No one else can see your email and phone. We promise we won’t share it. It’s helpful for us to have it if something happens and we need to let you know about a last minute change.

Crozet Independence Day Parade and Celebration – July 5, 2015

One of my favorite things about life in Crozet is the entirely-volunteer-driven Crozet Independence Day Parade and Celebration. This year the celebration is on 5 July 2015.

The parade starts at 5.

Bounce houses, games, food, music at Crozet Park starts at 6.

Fireworks start at dark (around 9:30)

Crozet Independence Day Parade and Celebration - 2015

July 5, 2015 is a Sunday. Why Sunday?

It’s because the fireworks companies are booked at bigger venues on Saturday night and none were available, even over a year in advance. But because our show is Sunday night instead, we are getting a discount and so can afford an even bigger display!

Blue Ridge Beads & Glass Classes for Homeschoolers

via email –

Blue Ridge Beads & Glass, offers stained glass and beading classes for homeschoolers. The Stained Glass class consists of a approximately 16 hours of instruction and is suitable for ages 12 and over. Students will learn the skills necessary to design, cut, grind, foil, solder and complete a one square foot panel. Jerry O’Dell, owner, taught 2nd-3rd grade in C’ville public schools (BS, UVA), and has taught Stained Glass for 15 years. Beading classes are taught by co-owner, Suzie O’Dell and are 1-1.5 hour sessions teaching specific jewelry making skills to produce a finished project. The various classes can be scheduled consecutively to build competency in beaded and wire jewelry making. Age levels for the beading classes can range from K-12.

Please see our website at crozetbeads.com, and contact us by phone: 434-823-4237 or email: [email protected]. The store is located in the Crozet Shopping Center, 5730A Three Notch’d Rd, Crozet VA 22932. References are available upon request.

I don’t publicize everything that comes my way, but I think this is a pretty cool thing to offer – for homeschoolers or non-homeschoolers.

Wednesday Morning Bicycle Riding in Crozet

We’ve had a good first two weeks of rides; this Wednesday should bring another nice ride as the weather should be fantastic.

Hopefully soon we’ll have enough riders for two groups – a fast and a not-quite-as-fast group. Interested? Learn more here or email me.
