For background on the Downtown Crozet project, a good starting place is on RealCrozetVA, in the categories for Downtown Crozet, Barnes Lumberyard, and CCAC.
Last night was a fun forum at Brownsville. The White Hall and At-Large candidates for school board made some time to lay out their positions and reasons for running for school board.
First thoughts:
Having an actual, contested election, for our school board seat is so incredibly refreshing.
We have some well qualified candidates for both White Hall & At-Large School Board seats
I appreciated Dolly Joseph’s thoughts on technology, “hitting it with a technology stick” and her pushing back on the 1:1 technology ratio. We do live in a relatively affluent community (relatively!) – giving kids who already have devices is wasteful. (my opinion: and stupid).
Hurricane Joaquin remains a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 miles per hour and gusts up to 155 miles per hour. The latest forecast path from the National Hurricane Center is similar to previous forecasts in taking the storm east of the DelMarVa Peninsula but the overall track has shifted to the east. Such a scenario would reduce the impact on central Virginia, but by no means is this forecast finalized and definite. Joaquin is still a threat to both the Mid-Atlantic and Atlantic Coast and will continue to be monitored in the next several days.
I know that the intersection at Crozet Avenue and Tabor becomes challenging at times. Also, the right turn off of 250 on to Crozet Avenue at the stoplight.
– If we get the worst case scenario we might see flooding in places that we normally don’t. Some places that come to mind are the corner of Tabor and Crozet ave, there is a spot along Mint Springs Road …we could have problems under the bridge on Crozet Ave if drains get clogged or can’t handle the volume.
Things to get:
– Coffee, water, matches and candles-check. One large bin of back up water for flushing
– I buy tea lights in bulk at World Marker. 6 hr. burn, and safer than other options.
– Great Valu has some eco friendly ones…I say eco friendly because they don’t have something bad candles have..my brain forgetting what:) but anyway display next to organic soaps on end aisle near register…I’ve used them.
Dear Crozet Friends, Owen’s bike was STOLEN out of our YARD last night. It’s a Fuji, 21-speed mountain bike, Thrill SE, blue, 17 inch frame (I think), disc breaks, and all. It’s BLUE, and the frame to me always looked really thick and sturdy, with FUJI written across it. I’m working on getting photos. Owen saved and bought this with his own money less than a month ago. If anyone has any information, please, please, let us know. Aside from that, know that someone came IN OUR YARD to steal a bike, and as you know, that’s not easy to do (no way to park on the street… they either had to actually pull in our driveway or park at least a house away, and walk through 2 yards to take it). Owen is crushed. Neighborhood friends, please be on the lookout. … We will make a police report. Owen’s bike looks a lot like this, but smaller frame.
I had my first “adult” bike stolen off my front porch several years ago; it’s a crappy feeling and I hope we can find this kid’s bike.
On Saturday, October 10, The Crozet Trails Crew will hold their annual 5K Trail Race. Come and join the fun: run, jog, walk, or cheer on the participants.
Starting and finishing at the soccer field at Claudius Crozet Park, the course winds 3.1 miles through the trails east of the park. The course is relatively flat, but all trail. Registration is $20 on-line (check out the crozettrailscrew.org website for the RaceIT link) or $25 in person on Friday, Oct. 9, 6-8 pm at Crozet Running or Saturday at the park 7-8 am.
All runners receive a race T-shirt as well as entrance into The Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival which is held right after the race. There will be great prizes for overall (first place male and female get a bridge named in their honor!) and age-group winners. There is also a random drawing of some great prizes donated by local businesses following the race and all participants who are present will be eligible.
New this year – Kids Race! (for kids up to 7 years old) The kids race will take place on the soccer field at 8:00am. There is no registration fee, but please indicate on your registration form if your child plans to run. The course is one lap around the soccer field, approximately 400 meters. All finishers get a prize.
This is the major fundraiser for the Crozet Trails Crew, a grassroots community organization whose mission is to connect Crozet and Western Albemarle with trails and greenways.
On September 2 around 8:25pm, Albemarle police say a 22-year-old male was hit and killed by a train in Crozet about 100 yards east of Starr Hill Brewery.
– Landscape company J.W. Townsend planted the meadow seed mix of 16 varieties of wild flowers and grasses early this summer as a joint project of The Landings at Waylands Grant and Old Trail. This meadow will become fully established and self-sustaining over the next 2-3 years. You may have noticed that it is attracting a lot of butterflies!
– Kudos to Geoff Shaw with JWTownsend for planting the awesome meadow. And thank you to Ben Wilson and the residents of Old Trail and Waylands Grant who helped with the design of this project.
– some annuals will reseed themselves, such as zinnias and the blanket flowers (the yellow ones with red centers) . I wish more communities would do this – mowing so much is so unnecessary and would save not only money but create less noise & air pollution, and is great for the bugs and birds too.
