Interested in the Crozet Cycling Club?

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. ~ Ernest Hemingway

You may have seen us on the road, and hopefully you saw the great story in last month’s Crozet Gazette.

If you’re interested in riding with the Crozet Cycling Club (we have 3 segments of the club now!), come out to Pro Re Nata this Friday, 24 June between 7 and 9. (the facebook event is here) We’re calling this a non-spandex social.  Already ride? Cool. Thinking about starting to ride? Come on down.

6am. Good fun. #crozetcycling #crozet

If you’re out on local scenic roads at the crack of day, you’re likely to see a posse of Crozet cyclists trailing slipstreams, winding like wind down the roads.

“This area’s hard to beat. It’s gorgeous. We stop to take pictures,” said Duncan. “We take time to appreciate where we are. Morning commuters know us because of our headlight power. We stick together as a group. We’re extremely conscientious about safety and sharing the road. We live here and we don’t want to piss off our neighbors.

At the moment, we have 3 groups of riders –

  • Wednesday morning at 6am – and usually every other morning as well)
  • The 9:30 Club  – who meet Fridays at 7:15 at Mudhouse during the summer
  • The Easy Riders – meet at Crozet Mudhouse on Mondays and Thursdays. ** see the end of this post for more information on the Easy Riders

* one request – if you do request to be a member of one of the google groups, please also email me and let me know a little about who you are and how long you’ve been riding; the google groups are private groups, and we like to know with whom we’re communicating (our email threads tend to be comical from time to time, too).

I’m always happy to answer questions, or talk about the different groups, and which one may be the best fit for you. Call/email/text me anytime and 434-242-7140.

We are now discussing holding clinics for those of us – beginners and not-so-beginners – to learn to be better skilled and safer riders. I truly love and am humbled by the growth and evolution of this group.

If you’re interested in riding with the Crozet Cycling Club, come out to Pro Re Nata this Friday, 24 June between 7 and 9. (the facebook event is here) We’re calling this a non-spandex social.

Crozet Real Estate Conversation – at PRN!

We’ve been doing our Crozet Real Estate Conversations at the Mudhouse for the past few months, and have done our market update videos at several Crozet businesses. We’re shaking things up this month and for the forthcoming months … Thirsty (real estate) Thursdays.

The Third Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30, David Ferrall and I will be at PRN to talk about the Crozet (or Charlottesville/Albemarle/Nelson) real estate markets. PRN have Wi-Fi, so we’ll probably be running some real estate statistics, too, because that’s one of the things we do for fun (really).

Have questions about the Crozet real estate market? Stop by PRN Thursday, 16 June from 5:30 to 7:30.

Support the Crozet Independence Day Parade & Fireworks (2016)

via email –

“We are writing to ask for your enthusiastic support of our small town tradition – our annual Crozet Independence Day parade and fireworks show!

This event helps maintain the best of Crozet – friends and neighbors coming together to enjoy good times, celebrate our nation’s independence and help out others.  It’s an event that brings our community together and is an important fund-raiser for many local organizations like the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, Crozet Lions, and Claudius Crozet Park. Your attendance at the event helps them, too.

1st Day of School – 23 August 2016

via Henley Matters –

Dear Members of our School Community:

Our School Board recently adopted the calendar for the 2016-17 school year. The first day of school will be Tuesday, August 23.

Perhaps the most significant change is the adding of five minutes at the end of the school day for all schools, with the exception of Yancey Elementary School. Yancey has an academic enrichment program after school. Other schools in the division may vary on how the five minutes is added to their day based upon previous changes they have made or due to bus schedule requirements.

Our addition of these five minutes will prevent the need to add any weather-related make-up days after June 9, 2017. You may be assured this date will not change as the end of the school year.

The calendar does designate Monday, February 20, and Friday, March 31, as potential make-up days, if needed. No other make-up days will be necessary, since the addition of five minutes to the school day will be the equivalent of two additional days of instructional time over the course of the year.

We are grateful for the input of many of you as we developed the calendar, especially your views that we not add make-up days that would impact spring break or extend the school year in June.

School start times will not change. As planning for next year is completed, each school will report their opening and closing times to their families, as they have done in the past. For a look at the 2016-17 calendar, please visit:

Re Store N Station Faces Setback from County Planning Commission

Charlottesville Tomorrow reports:

A proposal to expand Re-Store’N Station, a controversial gas station and convenience store in Crozet, may be facing another contentious review process after the Albemarle County Planning Commission voted Tuesday to recommend denial of a special use permit amendment.

I’d make one change to the above – “A proposal to expand Re-Store’N Station, a controversial gas station and convenience store in Crozet, may be will be facing another contentious review process … ”

For some quick background, spend a few minutes watching the video from the January CCAC meeting.

Help Feed Crozet Kids This Summer

A couple weeks ago I posted a link on RealCrozetVA facebook to this story.

When the final bell announces the start of summer, the 21 million American children who rely on free or reduced-cost lunches during the school year will look ahead to what Lucy Melcher, the associate advocacy director for No Kid Hungry, calls “the hungriest time of the year.”

This week brings an effort by Crozet Elementary and Brownsville Elementary PTOs (among many others) to feed kids over the summer. (bolding mine)

Summer break is an exciting time for most children filled with summer camps and vacations. However, there are some children that will spend the next two months, unfortunately, hungrier without a school lunch.

The Brownsville Elementary PTO and the Crozet Elementary PTO are working together to support Nourishing Minds distribute lunches to the students attending summer school this year. Summer school is located at Crozet Elementary June 27 through July 15, 2016 for both Crozet Elementary and Brownsville Elementary school students.

We are currently seeking team leaders to help prepare and bag lunches. Team leaders would be responsible for organizing a group of volunteers (sports teams, Boy Scouts, or friends), to prepare and bag lunches for a day. Team leaders will be provided all supplies needed and get to prepare lunches at a location they choose. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help – please visit our sign up genius to become a team leader!

We can do this, Crozet.

The Past Few Weeks on RealCrozetVA Facebook – 1 June 2016

I highly encourage folks to like/visit the RealCrozetVA facebook and twitter pages … traffic news in particular makes it to the twitter feed.  RealCrozetVA instagram is pretty active, too, but I’ve added that to the blog, below).  (I hate Facebook, too, but for now, it’s an important part of our lives) That said, here’s a quick round-up of the past few weeks.

Whew! Lots happening!

Smoked Coming to Piedmont Place

Downtown Crozet is getting another restaurant … coming to Piedmont Place (near the Crozet Library).

via facebook:

Smoked is expanding from downtown Cville to downtown Crozet, with our flagship, full service restaurant. Local entrepreneurs Drew and Michelle Holzwarth are creating a one of a kind, truly iconic building in the heart of Crozet, and we couldn’t me more honored to anchor it! Smoked Kitchen and Tap will feature a Chef driven locally inspired menu, in addition to our true, slow smoked, offset Hickory BBQ! Rotating beer taps, a downstairs patio, and our signature 4th floor bar “The Rooftop”, will make this the perfect place to begin or end you day on the Brew Ridge Trail!

(thanks, Laura for the heads up)

Piedmont Place is taking shape. #crozet

In other news,  the Downtown Crozet Initiative open meeting for June has been canceled, but I expect the organizational meeting would still be open to the public.
