I’m going to do these posts each Friday in December. Have something to add to the Crozet Calendar? Do it yourself, or email me the details. Click each event for times and details.

  • Interstate 64 Corridor Study
    • … a public open house to learn more about a joint study to examine transportation issues in the I-64 Corridor from Charlottesville to Staunton (I-81 Interchange). The project will examine traffic congestion, transit, vehicle speeds and public safety issues.  This Open House provides an opportunity to learn about the study and interact with the study team and agency officials. Most importantly, it will allow citizens the opportunity to provide input and identify areas of concern. The project study team will be available to answer your questions and take your comments. Additional project information is available by clicking here.

Service Tax Districts in Albemarle County?

Crozet - Image from Charlottesville Tomorrow
Crozet – Image from Charlottesville Tomorrow

I’ll wait for the news reports to come in before formulating my own opinion, but the tweets from Neil Williamson, of the Free Enterprise Forum, from today were interesting.

Update: Sean Tubbs with Charlottesville Tomorrow has more.

Short question – would you be willing to pay more taxes to fund infrastructure improvements in Crozet? Such as the Lickinghole Creek bridge/connector from Westhall to 250?

Say … $100/year?*

(Illustration: For a house assessed at $350,000, an increase
of 2.8 cents on the tax rate would equate to an annual
increase of $98.00; a 1.6 cent increase on the tax rate
would equate to an annual increase of $56.00. )

A few points from the County presentation: (I highly recommend you read the whole thing)

  • Services districts are a tool that have been authorized for decades
  • The general purpose of a service district is to provide additional, more complete or more timely services of government than are desired for the locality or localities as a whole
  • Service districts are geographic areas composed of less than all of the County’s territory, and whose boundaries are established by the Board of Supervisors
  • The Board may levy and collect an annual tax on real property within the service district to pay for the facilities authorized to be provided in the district
  • The tax is an ad valorem tax

As the conversation continues

And I’d forgotten about these stories

Important note – When people refer to Crozet as a “town,” they are wrong.

*This is why permanent URLs are important. I’m looking at you, Daily Progress and Albemarle County, the websites of the dead links.

Recent RealCrozetVA facebook posts – November & December 2016

I have a friend who isn’t on facebook, and sometimes when I mention something to him that I wrote about on the RealCrozetVA facebook page, he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. He’s a big reason/reminder that I put these summary posts up.

I just liked this picture

One note: I’ve started sending traffic numbers to people who send me stories or tips. I think it’s interesting to see how many people read and share facebook stories. The Brownsville Market traffic story as of this writing has reached almost 3,000 people. Not bad.

Christmas Trees in and Around Crozet

Before you know it, I’ll be posting the “here’s where to recycle Christmas trees” post (usually in Crozet Park). For now, here’s a list of some of the places in and around Crozet to get a Christmas tree.

My post from 2011 is mostly still accurate, but a few links are dead, so at a friend’s/client’s request, here is an list of places to get Christmas trees in and around Crozet. (Thanks to the Facebook & RealCrozetVA Twitter friends!)

Pick your own + pre-cut Christmas trees

Crozet Board of Trade Meeting 11-21-2016 Recap

Quite a few business owners at Pro Re Nata tonight for the Crozet Board of Trade meeting.

  • Lots of good information about the new Crozet Master Plan survey
  • Good post-meeting discussions ensued.

Then come to the next CBOT meeting, and if nothing else, be aware of – and participate in – the Crozet Master Plan update the Crozet Community Association (CCA), Crozet Community Advisory Committee (CCAC), and Crozet Board of Trade (CBOT) are doing.

Busy day in Crozet!

Great Valu in Crozet

From Allison Wrabel’s story (make sure to click through and read the whole thing)

Crozet Market LLC, comprised of the owners of the Crozet Shopping Center and Raphael Strumlauf, owner of the Market Street Market in downtown Charlottesville, purchased the Great Valu from Red Front Stores, Inc. and the Wagner family.

General Manager Jean Wagner is retiring at the end of the year, according to a press release.

The new team is taking over operations of the store immediately, but Wagner will be working alongside them until the end of the year, according to the release.

The store will continue to operate under the Great Valu name.

Update 16 November 2016 – Great story at the Crozet Gazette. (read the whole thing)

He’s already decided some changes on for the Great Valu. “We’re going to add a deli and a bakery and do more with produce. We’ll try fresh seafood and see if people are receptive. We’ll expand the organic section. To me this is a lot of space.” The Great Valu has 14,000 square feet total with 10,000 sq/ft in the selling area and the remainder in storerooms and work areas.

“What makes a store nice is customer service,” Strumlauf said. “Really knowing the customer. Nobody knows better what direction a store should go than the customers. I’m going to be spending a whole lot of time here through the holidays. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. I don’t want to take away a single thing the store has. I want to remerchandise some things.” He gave as an example the possibility of moving some drink machines. “I don’t want to take a great store and get arrogant about changing things. I want the first thing people see when they walk in to be something fresh. It sets the whole tone for the store. That’s the direction. I want it to be a really nice place to shop. I want the people in Ivy to come here.
