WAHS Principal Resigns; Search is On for New Principal

Less than two years in, Dr. John Werner, WAHS principal, is resigning, effective 30 June of this year.

And this is the point of the story where I encourage parents – of elementary school and middle school kids in particular – to get involved and vocal in this process. This is the school where either you’ll send your kids or you’ll depend on when you sell your house.

School quality matters for a lot of reasons, not least because school quality directly impacts property values – and school quality is one of the very few things in which home buyers do not compromise.

Dear Members of our School Community:

The school division is publicly announcing today that I have submitted my resignation as the principal of Western Albemarle High School effective on June 30.

This was not an easy decision but it represents an important priority in my life—the opportunity to return to my Midwestern roots, specifically Illinois, to be closer to my family.

When I joined Western in 2013, I knew I was joining an incredibly talented and motivated team and it only has gotten better. It truly has been a privilege to be at a school so focused on developing students to be across-the-board exceptional, in academics, in athletics, in the arts, as citizens and in their life’s passions and work.

The school division soon will begin the process to appoint a new principal for our school, which will include an online survey and a screening committee. I urge you to be a contributor. In the meantime, please know I will dedicate all of my efforts to ensuring that our year exceeds our expectations. My most important objective between now and June 30 will be for the new leader of our school to have the best possible foundation upon which to build even greater achievements for you in future years.

Thank you for all you do on behalf of our students and our school.

Sincerely,

John Werner
