Show your Support for the (building of) Crozet Library

via email:

Greetings friends/patrons of the Crozet Library,

Crozet and JMRL staff and board representatives have been working with Albemarle County staff and Supervisors for some time to urge them to fulfill their promise of building the new Crozet/Western Albemarle Library.

The plans for the new library were approved by the County Architectural Review Board in April. The parking lot for the new library is currently under construction.

A small group of supporters is convinced that strong and sustained advocacy is the only way to get the new library built. We are in the process of organizing this grassroots effort as “Build Crozet Library.”

There’s a particular urgency to this effort: without seeing steps taken toward building the new building soon, JMRL will need to start reducing the collection at the current Crozet Library. The excellent staff has done everything they can to make the space work for all patrons, but the crowded conditions are not sustainable.

Brief Real Estate Market Update for Crozet – September 2011

For purposes of this brief update, “Crozet” means “22932 zip code”. When I run numbers manually or search for my clients, I use Brownsville Elementary + Crozet Elementary school districts to define “Crozet.”

Briefly analysis through captions:

New listings coming on the market in Crozet are down, year over year. This is good … fewer homes coming on the market is a good trend.

New Listings, All Home Types - ZIP- 22932

First Cross Country meet in Old Trail today – Be Alert for Runners!

From the Friends of Western Albemarle Cross Country, Track & Field:

WAHS is holding its first cross country meet on its new Old Trail course today. The meet starts at 5:00, so drivers should know that they should be prepared to stop for runners. There will be signs and people at the road crossings – by the trailhead for the nature trail close to 250, by the soccer field and also on Golf Drive. A second and final home meet will be held next Wednesday, October 5 at 5:00, so the same caution applies for next week.

Mint Springs Playground Closed (temporarily)

Sarah Z sends this in:

After a recent inspection, Albemarle County’s Parks and Recreation Department determined that the playground at Mint Springs was in need of repair. The replacement parts were promptly ordered and have already been received. According to Parks and Recreation employee Tim Hughes, the current plan is to repair the areas of concern as soon as the weather permits. Until that time, the playground is considered unsuitable for public use and will remain closed. It is currently estimated that the repairs will occur within the next several weeks. As to the long-range plans for the playground, it is on the schedule to be replaced in the next few years.

A Sad Day for Crozet – School Counselor Passes

From Mrs. Crummie at Crozet Elementary:

This is Mrs. Crummie. I am calling to share with you about the loss of a staff member. As you may know, our previous school counselor, Melanie Hood, was battling Leukemia. I was informed today by her husband that she passed away this afternoon. I would encourage you to share this information with your child. We will have a team of counselors at our school for the next couple of days available to address any students’ questions and concerns.

We have been in support of Melanie and her family during her illness with cancer, and have all felt the tremendous love and care from the entire community. We are so thankful for your unwavering support during this difficult time.

Update on the “Safe Routes to School” Grant

Remember the Walk to School grant for the part of Crozet near Crozet Elementary?

So did a concerned parent who asked the County for an update, and received this response.

From Jack Kelsey with Albemarle County:

Regarding the Safe Routes to School Project, the short answer is that it’s being designed by David Anhold & Associates and I’m expecting a progress print this week.

The long answer is that a lot has transpired to get us to this point. Our original plan was to provide this simple design in-house, we hired a surveyor, and had the project area surveyed.  We were in the process of addressing VDOT’s environmental requirements (required by all projects funded by VDOT), when VDOT informed us that we could not do the design in-house due to the project being funded by the grant.

The design fee was expected to be small and well below the procurement limit where we may request 3 fee proposals from consultants, then choose one and move on with design.  However, VDOT’s procurement rules required this project have a public advertised “request for proposals”, formal interview of the candidates by a committee, selection and negotiation of the fee, and lastly VDOT’s approval of the selection process and chosen firm. Fortunately at that time we were just completing our procurement process for civil engineering “on-call” design services contracts.  We had to submit our procurement process information to VDOT for review and did receive approval to select from our new “on-call” consultants.

This took time, but far less than then going through a formal project specific “request for proposals”.  We provided Anhold Associates with a project scope and requested a fee proposal.  The fee was reviewed/approved, a project order routed for signature, and a notice to proceed was issued 10 August 2011.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Also:

The award was announced in 23 April 2010, but the required VDOT-County agreement wasn’t approved by VDOT until 25 August 2010.  What needs to be kept in mind is that with State-Federal grants there are inherent processes and procedures that must be followed, so a portion of this time is allotted to these tasks.  However, overall the time frame is conservative to allow adequate time to get the project scheduled and completed.

As for our schedule, we plan to have the plans, plats and bidding documents completed by the end of the year.  Then have the right-of-way/easement dedication acquired this winter.  The construction will then be publically bid late winter/early spring 2012.  Construction could then begin in spring 2012 and we estimate it will take about 3 months to complete.
