Harris Teeter’s First LEED Store Gives Shoppers an Opportunity to Go Green and Save Green
Media Tours will be Available Following the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Charlotte, NC – Harris Teeter is serious about its commitment to environmental sustainability and is excited to gear up for the opening of its first registered Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) store. The new Harris Teeter, located in Blue Ridge Commons Shopping Center on 545 Radford Lane in Charlottesville, VA, will open on Wednesday, May 6 following a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony at 8:00am.
Similar to other Harris Teeter locations, the new LEED store will have recycling centers in the lobby but was built with additional energy and environmental design components in mind to register for LEED certification. The store is 25% more energy efficient than the industry average and uses an 85% less refrigerant load. Over 30% of all building materials were manufactured regionally (within 500 miles of the store), 82% of all construction waste was recycled, and 50% of all wood came from certified sustainable forests. Skylights in the ceiling help light the store, freezer cases were designed with LED lighting, and water saving devices were installed in all of the water fixtures.
Harris Teeter also gives its new neighbors a variety of ways to go green in its stores. Shoppers can recycle both paper and plastic grocery bags in the recycling centers located at the stores front entrance. They can also purchase reusable shopping bags for just $0.99 and are encouraged to use these every time they shop at their local Harris Teeter.
To save green, Harris Teeter encourages its shoppers to visit harristeeter.com and sign up for a Very Important Customer (VIC) card today. The VIC card allows shoppers to take advantage of weekly specials, participate in VIC promotions, sweepstakes and best of all, it is FREE! Shoppers can also sign up for e-VIC and have weekly specials e-mailed to them every Wednesday, notifying customers when items they regularly buy are on sale, plus they will receive member only discounts!

Jennifer –
Thank you so much for posting this.
Are the 60 new hires local?
Yes the majority of our new hires our local.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see a pharmacy or a starbucks. Hmm.

Yep – no Starbucks or pharmacy (for now). I’m thinking that slipped through the press release cracks … much as the “Open 24 hours” sign was put up and taken down after a week or so … 🙂 Localizing these stores must be a bear. 🙂
I can do without Starbucks, but it would be nice to have a pharmacy… and a salad bar. 🙂
